Pregnancy is such a special time. It goes by so quickly, and having it documented is something you’ll treasure for years to come. Every maternity session is different because every couple has their own story. There are however, some poses that I love to capture during a maternity photo session. They create timeless images.
For this beach maternity session, we met during golden hour when the light was soft and warm. The couple were gentle with each other, excited for the arrival of their little one, and completely happy to simply enjoy the moment together. They brought along three outfit changes, as well as a few meaningful props including tiny baby boots, a favourite toy, and their baby’s ultrasound scan. We kept everything relaxed and natural, allowing genuine moments to unfold.
Here are some of my favourite poses that I always recommend during a maternity session.
There’s something so effortless about simply taking a walk. It helps couples relax, gives them something to do, and creates genuine interaction. Holding hands, chatting, or sharing a quiet smile often results in some of the most natural photographs.
Walking also lets the beautiful scenery become part of the story, especially on a quiet beach with endless reflections and golden light.
Every maternity session should include moments where the mum-to-be gently cradles her growing bump. It’s simple, elegant, and beautifully highlights this exciting chapter.
Whether standing alone or with a partner’s hands joining in, this pose always feels meaningful without looking forced.
One of my favourite poses is when the partner stands behind, wrapping their arms around the mum-to-be. It’s intimate without being overly posed and naturally shows the connection between them.
Adding both hands around the bump makes the image even more special, celebrating the little life they are waiting to meet.
Sometimes the simplest poses say the most. Standing close together with foreheads touching creates a quiet, intimate moment that allows the couple to focus entirely on each other.
Backlit by the setting sun, these silhouettes become soft, romantic images that never go out of style.
Not every photograph needs both parents. Taking a few moments to photograph the mum-to-be on her own allows her to pause and soak in the journey.
Standing by the shoreline with the warm sunset behind her created peaceful images that reflected both strength and anticipation.
Some of the smallest items tell the biggest story. Baby boots, a favourite toy, tiny clothes, or an ultrasound photo all add a personal touch to the gallery.
These little details help tell the story of the baby long before they arrive and often become some of the family’s favourite images.
The best photographs rarely come from perfect posing. They happen in between.
A shared laugh, a gentle touch, looking out across the ocean together, or simply holding hands often creates the most heartfelt images. Rather than directing every movement, I encourage couples to slow down, enjoy each other’s company, and simply be present.
Those genuine moments are the ones that tell the story.
Creating Memories That Last
Golden hour at the beach gave us the perfect backdrop for this session. The soft light, calm waves, and peaceful atmosphere matched the excitement and gentle love this couple shared as they prepared to welcome their baby.
Every maternity session is unique, but my goal is always the same—to create relaxed, natural photographs that reflect who you are and preserve this beautiful season of life. Years from now, these images won’t just remind you what you looked like. They’ll remind you how it felt as you waited to meet the newest member of your family. If you would like to capture your beautiful story get in touch and I would love to help out.
Till next time
