There is something so special about photographing a family at home, especially when you’re celebrating a little one’s first birthday.
I have a real soft spot for in-home family sessions. There’s no need to rush off somewhere or worry about finding the perfect location. Instead, we can slow down, enjoy being together and capture your family in a place that feels familiar and comfortable.
This lovely family session in Berkshire was all about celebrating his first year and capturing this little chapter of family life. I remember the first birthdays of my daughters and how important this first year was.
During this session, we had first little steps, playing with favourite toys, lots of giggles, laughter and cuddles with Mum and Dad. There was beautiful natural light filling the home. However, it was the genuine connections and little interactions between the family that made the session so lovely.
Why I love in-home family photography
One of the things I love most about photographing families at home is how personal the photographs become.
Your home is part of your family’s story. The familiar surroundings, favourite toys, the sofa where you share cuddles and the little corners where your children play – these are all part of everyday life right now.
They might seem like ordinary details today, but years from now, they can bring back so many memories.
Children are also usually much more relaxed in their own environment. They can play, explore, move around and simply be themselves. There’s no pressure to sit still or smile at the camera. I love letting things unfold naturally and capturing those moments as they happen.

Your family will change so much over the years. Little hands will grow, first steps will turn into confident little runs, favourite toys will be replaced and the way your children reach for you will slowly change.
That’s why I think it’s so important to photograph these everyday moments, not just the big milestones.
